Webinar: FlexiGrid

FlexiGrid is a 4-year project aiming to provide an alternative and substantially improved method for handling structural uncertainty in 3D reservoir pillar grids. One of the key aspects to this proposal is the definition of 3D uncertainty cubes and their application to an existing 3D grid.

In today’s reservoir modelling workflow, structural uncertainty is rarely managed, and when it is, it may be implemented incorrectly because of unidentified errors in the structural modelling process.

Current methods for handling structural uncertainty involve editing the input data and re-building the 3D grid for each realisation of structural uncertainty. This results in several issues related to each realisation, namely faults are misplaced relative to the updated horizons and horizontal wells can easily be placed outside their correct zones.

A new structural uncertainty modelling method is proposed. Instead of correcting the input data for uncertainties, the ‘base case’ 3D grid is manipulated directly. This is not a simple task, because the topology of the grid must be maintained; i.e. avoid twisted grid-cells. This can be overcome by using an interpolation method which controls the distances adjacent coordinate-lines and corner-points can be moved relative to each other.

This is important in order to maintain grid topology. This interpolation and its application are key to the success of this project. These need to be performed in a structurally consistent manner and will be tested on simple control grids specifically setup to test the implemented functionalities, as well as real case examples.
