Work Career:

Pim van Bergen is a Principal Geochemist working in the industry for 30 years. He joined Shell in 2002 and has worked on global projects from the Gulf of Mexico to New Zealand, applying geochemistry from exploration, production and flow assurance to downstream refining. Between 2009  and 2018 he provided regional Geochemistry supporting daily operations in Europe and proactively driving the implementation of reservoir and production geochemistry as an integral part of well and reservoir management replicating his learnings globally to other Shell OUs. He is currently Principal Technical Expert for Production Geochemistry for Shell Group and as of 2018 he manages the Shell Geochemistry R&D laboratories in Amsterdam implementing the latest technologies into the business.

Outline:

Production geochemistry is an integrated part of Shell business in the operating units. Detailed geochemical analyses of both the gas and liquid phases are routinely used to aid our understanding of Reservoir Connectivity, as part of Well, Reservoir and Facility management (WRFM) and to provide crucial base line data for Decommissioning. Examples will be shown on how geochemistry is used and what the critical steps are to obtain the correct relevant data on time to influence decision making.
