Summary
"The Aurora Exploitation License represents a potential CO2 storage site in the northern North Sea. Within the storage site, the Lower Jurassic Dunlin Group represents the storage aquifer and seal pair, which is intersected and displaced by numerous faults. In a CO2 storage site, faults may serve as conduits or barriers to fluid flow. Therefore, we aim to reduce uncertainties associated with storage of CO2 within Aurora by performing detailed fault characterizations and across-fault seal assessments.
Our results show that i) fault populations within the Aurora storage site vary in strike, dip, and throw, and these factors control the migration of injected CO2, ii) both juxtaposition seals and membrane seals are present comprising different risk elements, and iii) smaller-scale structural traps may baffle migration of CO2, thus increasing the overall storage capacity."
