Abstract

Normal faults are not simple planes but are often complex structures comprising multiple sub-parallel segments separated by intact or breached relay zones. This presentation outlines a quantitative geometrical characterisation of fault segmentation in 2D and 3D that captures this complexity. Understanding this segmentation and its variability provides a basis for considering models of fault development and can be of value for many practical applications, including better evaluation of fault controls on the flow of hydrocarbons in faulted reservoirs and the initiation and termination of earthquake ruptures.

Bio

Vincent studied geosciences in Montpellier in the South of France. Further to this, he defended his PhD at the University Pierre and Marie Curie in Paris, where he looked at normal faults in layered rocks in the Southeastern French Basin. In 2012 he went to the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Canada, to study induced seismicity in the Western Canadian Basin before moving to Ireland to work with the Fault Analysis Group. Here he studied fault segmentation based on field data and seismic interpretation. Since January, Vincent is a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Fellow, having been awarded the fellowship in 2019 for a Project called FINSEIS, which concerns the role of fault segmentation on the magnitude of induced seismicity. Today, Vincent will present some results from his work in the Fault Analysis Group concerning the geometry of normal fault in 2D and 3D.
