Webinar: Dual Drilling

Several operators have planned and drilled two wellbores at different proximal locations on the Norwegian continental shelf. A prerequisite for each location is usually to first drill a pilot hole to evaluate the presence of shallow gas. Typically, the conductor hole is drilled before a pilot hole, followed by the opening of the pilot hole for running the casing.

Since the derricks’s well centres  are typically 10+ meters apart, the two well operations can be done simultaneously with a dual derrick rig: the “pilot-hole shallow-gas” wellbore and the “main” wellbore. While this initiative is thought to be efficient and time saving – and lowering emissions, it could also potentially also introduce new risk factors.
