Welcome to a webinar arranged by the FORCE Petroleum Systems network. This one-hour talk will be given by Daniel Palmowski. Daniel has spent the last 15 years on Petroleum Systems Modelling. During the last 7 years he has been employed in different roles as product analyst and product manager for Basin and Petroleum Systems Modelling at the Schlumberger Aachen Technology Centre in Germany.

Basin and Petroleum Systems Modelling and the associated Basin Analysis is now a standard part of any hydrocarbon exploration project. The basin analysis and the predictive forward modelling from basin scale to prospect scale has enabled the hydrocarbon industry to reduce and understand uncertainties and associated exploration risks. The requirements to explore for Carbon Sequestration sites are very similar to the hydrocarbon story. As more and more carbon storage projects are required, assessed portfolios of injection prospects need to be developed.

The most standard basin modelling software packages deliver several key elements for assessing storage plays and prospects. Present day petrophysical properties such as poro/perm, seal capacities and natural fractures are the main storage volume defining parameters. All of these parameters can be predicted including uncertainty analysis and probabilistic distributions. Based on the modelled geological subsurface, one can also apply the standard migration analysis available in BPSM to analyse fill and spill paths, saturation distributions and free-phase flow. Additional storage containers such as CO2 dissolution in water, transport by diffusion or the formation of carbonate cement can be quantitively analysed and predicted. Even though we are only starting to quantitively assess the CO2 storage potentials, in this presentation we would like to illustrate what can already be done and where we want to go in close collaboration with application and business needs.
