The pre-salt carbonate reservoirs in Brazil are one of the most significant recent global discoveries due to huge in-place volumes and high productivity. At same time, the carbonate reservoirs are highly complex presenting a high level of heterogeneity which increases the uncertainties when modelling and simulating the prediction of dynamic reservoir behavior.

It is therefore crucial to have robust data acquisition plans and multi-disciplinary reservoir characterization during exploration and appraisal phases. This information should include: understanding rock properties, fluid properties and fluid displacements as proper inputs to field development decisions and future reservoir management. In addition, there are also challenges related to planning and execution of drilling, completion, well testing and data acquisition operations that should be considered when developing pre-salt reservoirs.
