Mercury is a toxic trace metal often present in produced oil and gas. For this reason, mercury is heavily regulated, also under most sales gas contracts. Accurate knowledge of mercury concentration is therefore important in a development stage allowing for planning both operational protection and mercury removal.
Obtaining accurate measurements of mercury concentrations in petroleum are, however, challenging as the concentration changes over time, and could also relate to the storage container from sampling to analysis laboratory. As such, mercury proves to be a bit elusive.
The source and adsorption mechanism of mercury in petroleum is also of interest to investigate as this knowledge could help to predict geographic areas and depth intervals where mercury may be present in petroleum at elevated concentrations.
The NPD in cooperation with the University of Stavanger has sampled and analysed 277 cored source rock samples from the NOCS for analyses of Hg and other heavy metals. The results have been correlated with TOC, rock-eval and maceral types. This was done as a first attempt to approach some of the uncertainties related to Hg in petroleum.
Wintershall Dea, and several of the other oil and gas companies, have done separate studies to improve the measuring and understanding of Hg content in their different products.
NPD will now suggest to do the further work in a joint industry project to improve the collaboration between the operators on the Norwegian Continental Shelf on this matter.
The JIP proposed aims to reduce uncertainties and will attempt to connect geological settings and Hg concentrations in production, to better design the system to produce the mercury contaminated hydrocarbon stream from well bore via platform production facilities to the refinery/gas plant onshore.
