Webinar: NPD's use of seep studies on the NCS

Seismikk_med_bilder.JPG

During the last years NPD have performed several types of seep studies on the NCS, focusing on frontier areas in both opened and unopened areas. Don't miss out on this webinar with Rune Mattingsdal from the NPD speaking.

The seep studies include multibeam echosounder water column mapping from research vessels to locate gas seeps from the seabed, SAR-satellite studies to locate oil slicks on the sea surface, sediment coring to look for traces of seeping oil in the sediments, ROV-operations to document and sample oil and gas seeps in-situ at the seafloor, and geochemical analysis and studies to correlate seeping oil and gas to source rocks. So far, it has been documented that both oil and gas seeps are very common in the Barents Sea, and also in several areas of the North Sea. Among the highlights are the discovery and documentation of two large prolific oil and gas seep sites, one on top of the Sentralbanken high in the Central Barents Sea and the other in the Hornsund fault complex west of Svalbard. The latter having documented a new young source rock on the NCS. We have also with satellite data documented large episodic oil seeps in the southern North Sea, but these are still not sampled. The latest studies have focused on the possible regional extent of the new young source rock documented outside Svalbard, a source rock which can be present along the whole westernmost Barents Sea and large parts of the Norwegian Sea.

Speaker: Rune Mattingsdal, NPD.
Rune Mattingsdal has worked as a geologist at NPD in Harstad since 2012. His main task at NPD is exploration in both opened and unopened frontier areas, mainly using seismic data, but the last years he has also focused on different seep studies.
