Field Trip: Gulf of Corinth 2025
Welcome to 2025 Field Trip to the Gulf of Corinth. The field trip will take place in late May or early June. Location/accomodation: The field trip is located on the southern margin of the Gulf of Corinth basin. Accomodation will be at a hotel in the vicinity of the pictoresque mountain village of Kalavrita approx. two hours drive from the Athens airport.
Duration: The field trip is set take place in the end of May/beginning of June. The tentative program listed below is
based on departure on a Tuesday with return on a Saturday
Program: Tue: travel and introduction; Wed & Thu: field work in mountains; Fri: field work at cost; Sat: return.
Budget: Estimated NOK 9000. Minimum number of participants 8, maximum 15.

Other: Air-fare to be covered by traveller. All other costs are covered by the field-trip fee.
Recommendation and pricing/booking of plane-ticket will be given as soon as the trip is confirmed.
Note: Arrival to Athens on the ..x.. should not be after 1430 as we are planning to meet at the airport around 1500.
Departure from Athens on the ..x.. should not be before 1300 as we are planning to arrive at the airport at 1100.
The photo above is taken from a field trip stop just above the Kerpini fault, only 2 km to the northeast of Kalavrita. From this location, the Beta fault block is seen towards the west. Mapping of layering is possible and will be undertaken on the field trip, revealing significant “down-to-the-north” faults that offset the blocks pre-rift sedimentary section.
Geology: The Corinth Rift is situated in a backarc rift configuration set up by the plate tectonic movements between the African and Eurasian plates. Earthquake activity that relates to extensional tectonics is ongoing in this area.
Syn-rift Miocene to recent sedimentary sequences rest unconformably on top of Cretaceous and older strongly deformed basement rocks.
