ONS 2024

We will be present at the energy event ONS in Stavanger from 26 to 29 August. Meet us in hall 8, stand number 8100.

Get a "sneak peak" of parts of our stand in this short video.

The main theme of our stand is the Norwegian continental shelf (the NCS), highlighting the activities here and the roles of both our organization and the Ministry of Energy

This page serves as a "digital version" of our stand, which is in collaboration with the Ministry of Energy. It aims to provide you with insights into the key messages we wish to convey.

New map-based ONS website

Explore our new map-based ONS website to learn more about the NCS and our responsibilities. This includes petroleum, CO2 storage (CCS), seabed minerals, and more.

Our ONS programme

We have a programme for ONS on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. Come and listen to relevant and interesting presentations by our experts.

The Norwegian continental shelf

The continental shelf is the submarine prolongation of a coastal state’s landmass to the outer edge of the continental margin. The continental shelf falls under the coastal state’s jurisdiction. Areas of the continental shelf are, however, part of the international seabed area.

The NCS and maps

Petroleum activity

The oil and gas sector is a key contributor to Norway’s welfare society and the largest industry measured in terms of value added, government revenues, investments and export value.

Carbon capture and storage (CCS)

Carbon capture and storage entails capturing, transporting and storing CO2 from large emission sources such as industry and waste-to-energy, and also directly from the atmosphere.

Seabed minerals

Seabed minerals rich in metals are important raw materials in the energy transition. On the Norwegian continental shelf, there are two types of mineral deposits – manganese crusts and sulphides. Both types contain several valuable metals that are crucial to produce batteries, wind turbines, PCs and mobile phones.

Geophysical surveys

Geophysical surveys are conducted for geological mapping of the NCS for two main reasons:

– One is to increase knowledge about the resource potential in the subsurface.

– The other is to detect potential shallow hazards in the near-surface. This is important for drilling wells or installing or repairing equipment on the seabed.

Offshore wind

Norway’s coast has some of the best wind resources in the world, with steady and strong winds. Winds are steady and strong, and the water depths off the coast are suitable for offshore wind turbines.

The Improved Recovery Award

The Improved Recovery Award is in recognition of efforts to improve recovery on the NCS. It is awarded by the Norwegian Offshore Directorate to production licenses, companies, projects or individuals for their commitment to improved recovery.

The Improved Recovery Award

Geobank

In Geobank – located in the Norwegian Offshore Directorate's basement at our main office in Stavanger – core samples and drill cuttings from exploration and production wells on the NCS are stored. In addition, we store oil and reference samples for geochemical standards. Within 2024, we have plans to make geological data publicly available for sampling in the same way as we do for petroleum data.

Data

The Norwegian Offshore Directorate serves as a national library for data from the NCS.

Technology

Technology has been very important for developing the oil and gas industry in Norway. The Norwegian Offshore Directorate shall stimulate the industry to develop, cooperate closer and utilise new technology to an even greater extent.

Geology

Our geologists interpret seismic and well data in order to understand the structure and formation of the complex Norwegian continental shelf.
