Shutdown and removal
Petroleum production from some of the fields on the Norwegian shelf has ceased, or is winding down. In the years to come, some of the facilities on the Shelf will be shut down and disposed of in a responsible manner.
Disposal of concrete facilities
During the period from 1973 to 1995, 14 concrete facilities were installed for production of petroleum on the Norwegian Continental Shelf (NCS). Two of these are floating (Heidrun A and Troll B), while the remainder are fixed and rest on the seabed.
Responsible removal of old facilities
Many facilities on the Norwegian shelf are approaching the end of their planned lifetime. The NPD expects a considerable increase in demand for expertice and technology for decommissioning these facilities in a responsible manner.
Disused equipment transported to land
The most common method for removing facilities from the Norwegian shelf is to dismantle them and transport them to land. New technology is being developed to make the work more cost-effective.
Frigg decommissioning
The Frigg field is the largest field on the Norwegian shelf to date where disposal of the facilities has been completed. Nearly five years after dismantling started in 2005, all topsides, steel jackets and equipment were removed from the field.
