The Norwegian Stratigraphic Committee (NSC) is an editorial drafting committee that is associated with the institutions that are officially responsible for exploring the geological resources in Norway, the Norwegian Geological Survey (NGU), the Norwegian Offshore Directorate and the Norwegian Polar Institute (NPI).

The Norwegian Offshore Directorate has primary responsibility for the work done by the Committee.

Since its inception in 1982, NSC has helped to quality-assure geological names and designations within the scope of these institutions – on land (NGU), on the Norwegian continental shelf (The Norwegian Offshore Directorate) and on Svalbard and Norwegian dependencies (NPI).

The objective is to ensure unified and consistent terminology for naming geological units, for use across relevant industries, academia and resource management authorities.

NSC reports the formally approved nomenclature to the national name database, GENINO, which is operated by NGU.
