Geology

The Norwegian Offshore Directorate is tasked with maintaining an overview over the petroleum resources on the Norwegian continental shelf (NCS). This includes both resources that have been produced, as well as remaining resources in fields and discoveries. We also prepare estimates for resources that have not yet been discovered.
Broad geoscientific expertise is crucial in our effort to map and interpret data surrounding the petroleum resources under the seabed, as well as in our work to follow up the companies engaged in producing these resources.
We have a national responsibility to safeguard data from the NCS, and to make it available to the industry and academia. We also provide expert advice to the Ministry of Energy.
Our expertise across geosciences also gives us tasks within the so-called new industries – CO2 storage, offshore wind and minerals on the seabed.
